Provides overall shift supervision of patient registration activities in Emergency Department. Ensures proper preparation of records of admission, transfer, and other data as required. A Brief Overview
Provides overall shift supervision of patient registration activities in Emergency Department. Ensures proper preparation of records of admission, transfer, and other data as required. Ensures EMTALA guidelines and MLH processes are followed. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do
  • Plans, organizes, and implements operations of Emergency Department admissions to meet department and hospital goals and objectives.
  • Assures department shift operations run smoothly and efficiently within established guidelines.
  • Maintains and develops a competent, productive, and quality conscious workforce by hiring, evaluating performance, counseling, training, issuing corrective action, and recommending promotion or discharge of department personnel according to the MLH value system.
  • Administers and executes policies and procedures that affect the department.
  • Conducts training classes for staff to include orientation, competency assessments, and in-service training on new policies and/or procedures.
  • Assists with preparation of annual budget and human resource utilization plan for admissions team of the ED.
  • Directs departmental quality monitoring and evaluation activities and implements measures to ensure hospital, JCAHO and other quality standards are met.
  • Accepts authority and responsibility for staff/physician collaboration to enhance patient care.
  • Demonstrates effective customer relations skills, promotes a positive work environment and contributes to overall team effort.
  • Ensures that staff monitors and applies the implementation of Emergency Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) and Third Party Liability/Managed Care guidelines relating to priority determination, coverage identification, and managed care requirements.

Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Associate's Degree

Work Experience Requirements
  • 3-5 years Progressive responsibilities

  • Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as policy and procedure manuals.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others’ workflow.
  • Ability to lead and motivate individuals and groups of Associates, management, physicians, patients and patients’ families.
  • Strong attention to detail skills.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Good influencing, consultative and coaching skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in making decisions and resolving problems related to admissions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of government regulations as they pertain to Emergency Department settings.

Supervision Provided by this Position
  • Supervises the ED Financial Couselors.

Physical Demands
  • Frequent non-invasive patient contact throughout shift.
  • Potential exposure to patient blood and body fluids.
  • Ability to react quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift, carry or push up to 15 lbs.
  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stopping, and repetitive motion.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and reviewing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal or reading.
