A Brief Overview
The Certified Medical Physicist ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation producing sources and imaging equipment. Calibrates or guides others in calibration of radiation therapy equipment. Implements quality control procedures for imaging devices. Performs calculations and patient treatment plans, dose verification, and chart checks. Develops and maintains radiation therapy safety procedures in compliance with regulations. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.
What you will do
- Consults with the Dosimetrist, Physicist, and Physician in development and maintenance of a quality assurance program for radiation therapy treatment modalities. Performs calibration on the radiation therapy equipment in accordance with standards set forth by State and Federal regulations.
- Develops and maintains the radiation safety program.
- Performs routine clinical duties, acceptance testing, and commissioning of new equipment or procedures as it relates to radiation treatment, under the supervision of the Chief Physicist.
- Provides technical direction, training, and continuing education to Physicists and Dosimetrists.
- Provides assistance to Radiation Oncologists and Medical Physicists in performing HDR and LDR brachytherapy procedures. Plans and performs the procedure as needed.
- Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrates competency in medical physics with the ability to carry out more complex assignments.
- Ability to understand and prepare complex written materials, such as technical reports and manuals.
- Ability to communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and patients.
- Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment.
- Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of work flow.
Supervision Provided by this Position
- Provides guidance and technical direction to junior physicists, dosimetrists, and radiation therapists.
Physical Demands
- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
- Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
- Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
