Manages the activities of all genetic counseling staff while assuming clinical duties that are within the scope of clinical practice for genetic counselors. Develops and implements strategies to maximize the productivity of the outpatient Genetic Counseling Clinic. Participates with genetics physician faculty in didactic teaching of medical students. Assists with select ongoing and future clinical quality improvement and other projects involving clinical genetics/genomics. Assures that compliance with all regulatory agencies, patient satisfaction and good public relations are achieved through the safe and efficient use of resources. A Brief Overview
Manages the activities of all genetic counseling staff while assuming clinical duties that are within the scope of clinical practice for genetic counselors. What you will do

  • Supervises genetic counselors, daily clinical assignment and coverage, including oversight of inpatient and outpatient support and further development of the genetic counseling clinic.
  • Provides supervision of the program, such as establishing program quality metrics, program policies and leadership over specific genetic research initiatives.
  • Carries out clinical genetic counseling services within the scope of best practices for the profession.
  • Participates in Genetics Division didactic and other teaching activities.
  • Administers and supervises training activities for genetic counseling student interns with assistance of other genetic counselors, administrative staff and faculty.
  • Assists with defining the future roles of the PLUGS committee and maintain communications with National PLUGS organization. Assists with new committee member recruitment and orientation. Develops/maintains meeting agendas with assistance of the genetic counseling and LB administrative support team.
  • Assists with developing in-person and online/digital training modules that orient users to the workflow for genetic test ordering. Assists with developing/modifying system for FAQs from other divisions. Maintains communications with the MLH/IT genetics implementation team.
  • Participates in ongoing and future clinical quality improvement and special projects.


Education Qualifications

  • Master's Degree Genetics

Experience Qualifications

  • 5-7 years Genetics counseling

Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of current theories and principles of human genetics and best-practice counseling techniques.
  • Ability to manage workflow and clinical assignment of genetic counselors
  • Strong psychological counseling skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and writing skills.
  • Skilled in negotiating with and between individuals and groups of people, including associates, management and physicians.
  • Skilled in developing and implementing long-range plans and programs.

Licenses and Certifications

  • ABGC Genetic Counselor - American Board of Genetic Counseling
  • Licensed Genetic Counselor - Tennessee - Tennessee Department of Health - Health Professional Boards

Supervision Provided by this Position

  • Manages the Genetic Counselors and genetic counseling assistants.

Physical Demands

  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stopping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work – exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
