A Brief Overview
The Certified Dosimetrist plans treatment techniques to deliver radiation to patients, ensures reproducibility of the treatment plan set up and delivery, and performs quality control to ensure accuracy and compliance with treatment plans. Provides direction and oversight to non-certified Dosimetrists and Radiation Therapists. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.
What you will do
- Plans treatment techniques to deliver prescribed dosage specified by the radiation oncologist.
- Follows dose prescription to plan a treatment technique to deliver prescribed dosage. Optimizes the treatment plan to ensure patient does not lose healthy organ or tissue function.
- Performs computer or manual calculations for the accurate delivery of the prescribed dose.
- Documents patient information in the patient record, and verifies the mathematical accuracy of all calculations.
- Ensures reproducibility of the treatment plan set up and plan delivery.
- Performs routine quality control program to include weekly chart checks to ensure accuracy and compliance with treatment plans.
- Performs intracavitary and interstitial radioactive implant procedures, and brachytherapy procedures.
- Conducts pre-treatment QA Checks, set up, and delivery of treatment plan in accordance with physician orders.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, compliance activities, and policies and procedures.
- Provides technical direction, training, and continuing education to radiation therapy staff and students.
- Performs other functions as assigned or requested.
Education/Formal Training Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree
- Master's Degree Medical Dosimetry
Work Experience Requirements
- 3-5 years Clinical Medical Dosimetry
Licenses and Certifications Requirements
- Certified Medical Dosimetrist - Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrates competency in Medical Dosimetry with comprehensive technical knowledge to carry out more complex assignments.
- Working knowledge of radiation safety rules and regulations.
- Must demonstrate strong mathematical skills including algebra, physics and pre-calculus.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as technical manuals.
- Ability to organize multiple task and projects and maintain control of work flow.
Supervision Provided by this Position
- There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this job, but this level is considered a subject matter expert in technical knowledge which is used to guide and train others. The incumbent may observe and instruct Dosimetrist trainees.
Physical Demands
- The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
- Must have good balance and coordination.
- The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
- The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
- Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
- Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
- Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
