A Brief Overview
Manages the day-to-day activities and operations of the assigned pharmacy area(s) in accordance with professional and MLH standards of practice. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do
  • Leadership & Direction: • Manages, coordinates, and controls daily operations in the assigned pharmacy area(s). • Manages the activities of Associates; monitors performance, clarifies work expectations, establishes goals, and promotes cooperation among individuals and groups. • Develops and implements processes through orientation, training and education to ensure that the competence of all staff members is assessed, maintained, improved and demonstrated. • Provides leadership for educational programs for staff, interns and/or residents in collaboration with the pharmacy team. • Plans and schedules work ensuring distribution of assignments and adequate staffing based on workload and productivity standards.
  • Business Planning/Financial • Assists in managing fiscal operations including preparation of expense and capital budget recommendations, monitoring, verifying, and authorizing expenditures. Assists in the development and implementation of plans to control costs and improve department operations. • Develops and supports business plans and strategies for pharmacy practice, assists with goal setting, and translates goals into operational tactics at the service level. • Prepares operational reports and analyses for the department; makes recommendations or draws conclusions from operational data. • Monitors services to ensure effective use of resources and assess needs for staff, equipment, and services based on actual or projected utilization.
  • Quality/Regulatory • Monitors trends by analyzing departmental procedures; identifies opportunities for operational efficiencies and quality of services provided. • Stays abreast of current practices and trends in the field of specialization, and uses and introduces best practice methodology to ensure continued improvement in care delivery. Maintains required competencies to practice pharmacy in assigned area(s). • Participates in research studies focused on improving medication use. • Assists with development and maintenance of performance standards to include quality assessment/improvement programs. • Identifies and evaluates safety and risk management issues; intervenes and problem solves as required. • Reviews and maintains departmental policies and procedures on a regular basis. • Ensures department adherence to ethical, legal, regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards that govern pharmacy practice.
  • Collaboration/Working Relationships • Ensures good working relationships between departments; serves as a resource and liaison for advanced problem solving related to pharmacy services. • Establishes relationships with key internal and external customers and service providers; builds strong collaborative relationships with the medical staff. • Investigates and coordinates resolution of service delivery problems or conflicts; formulates plans for resolution, follows-up to ensure effective resolution, and determines level of satisfaction. • Participates in national, state, and/or local professional organizations that support pharmacy professional practice.

Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree Pharmacy
  • Doctorate Pharmacy

Work Experience Requirements
  • PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency
  • PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration Residency
  • 3-5 years Pharmacy (clinical, hospital, outpatient, or specialty)

Licenses and Certifications Requirements
  • Pharmacist Mississippi - Mississippi Board of Pharmacy
  • Pharmacist Tennessee - Tennessee Board of Pharmacy
  • Pharmacy Board Certification American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP)
  • Board certified Pharmacist Board of Pharmacy Specialties

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, build, and work collaboratively with health professionals at all levels to coordinate patient care and achieve departmental goals.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmacy practice and administration principles and methods.
  • Skill and proficiency in standard software programs including but not limited to: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to lead and motivate individuals and groups of people toward the accomplishment of work and organizational goals.
  • Ability to plan and schedule tasks and projects and to maintain control of own and others’ work flow.
  • Skilled in negotiating with and between individuals and groups to achieve desired outcomes.

Supervision Provided by this Position
  • Manages the work of clinical and/or non-clinical staff supporting the assigned pharmacy area(s). May also direct contracted faculty and residents.

Physical Demands
  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: light work - exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • The conditions to which the Associate will be subject in this position: The Associate is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions; job functions are typically performed under conditions such as those found in general office or administrative work.
  • May have exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to infectious disease.
  • Travel may be required on occasion.
