Performs daily activities for cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing and storing of endoscopes and accessories. Maintains inventory levels and ensures proper care and operation of equipment. A Brief Overview
Performs daily activities for cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing and storing of endoscopes and accessories. Maintains inventory levels and ensures proper care and operation of equipment. Assists in care of patients undergoing endoscopic examinations and invasive procedures under the direction of the physician or RN. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do
  • Pre-cleans, tests, decontaminates, inspects, disinfects and/or sterilizes endoscopes in accordance with industry standards, guidelines and regulations, and manufacturers’ instructions for use.
  • Identifies and uses all appropriate methods related to sterilization and disinfection to prepare endoscopy scopes, supplies, and equipment needed for endoscopy procedures.
  • Participates in quality monitoring and evaluation activities; documents and maintains daily records of QA and sterilization functions.
  • Ensures that supplies and equipment are maintained and ready for use on an as needed basis and are returned to correct storage areas.
  • Maintains and ensures adherence to the sterile field by applying principles of aseptic techniques in accordance with regulatory guidelines and infection control procedures.
  • Provides technical assistance to the physician for patients undergoing endoscopic procedures.
  • Ensures the procedure room is fully equipped for patient procedures. Sets up procedure room, equipment and supplies; ensures equipment is in proper working order.
  • Prepares patient for procedures with follow through of physician orders, assists with explaining procedure to patient, drapes and positions patient, and connects monitors to patient as needed.
  • Assists with monitoring patient’s physiological status continuously during procedure according to established guidelines. Notifies physician/RN of any significant changes.
  • Under the direct supervision of an RN, provide post-procedure care for patients undergoing endoscopy and conscious sedation.

Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Technical Degree or Diploma GI/Endoscopy

Work Experience Requirements
  • 1-3 years Tech in the GI Lab

Licenses and Certifications Requirements
  • BASIC LIFE SUPPORT - American Heart Association
  • Certified Endoscope Reprocessor - International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management
  • Heartsaver CPR AED (CPR) American Heart Association
  • Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge and practice of basic patient care concepts and application of the principles of asepsis preferred.
  • Work requires the ability to read and understand complex instructions and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to perform the role of endoscopy tech for invasive procedures.
  • Ability to take emergency on-call responsibility on 24-hour rotating basis.
  • Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as patient records.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
  • Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgement.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of workflow.

Supervision Provided by this Position
  • There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this job.

Physical Demands
  • The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
  • The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
  • Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
  • Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
  • Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
